L’idea di Oliver Wass per il primo dei due CD è stata quella di contrapporre la musica di Misha Mullov-Abbado a quella di compositori italiani dei quattro secoli precedenti come Giovanni Maria Trabaci, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francesca Caccini e Barbara Strozzi.
Misha Mullov-Abbado è un bassista jazz, compositore e arrangiatore con sede a Londra. È stato un artista della BBC New Generation Artist e ha scritto per numerosi gruppi jazz e classici, tra cui la BBC Concert Orchestra. Il primo brano, Three Meditation Songs, è stato scritto per il Pelléas Ensemble nel 2016. Red Ruth è stato scritto per Oliver Wass un anno dopo, mentre Treachery è stata una commissione speciale per questo album.
Di questo Cd fanno parte anche i brani di Elsa Respighi e una esecuzione particolarissima del celebre brano Recuerdos de la Alhambra, probabilmente l’opera più famosa di Francisco Tárrega. Per suonarlo sull’arpa è necessaria una diteggiatura non convenzionale e una mano molto rilassata.
Il secondo CD contiene il Concerto per arpa e orchestra op. 1, di Luigi Alessandro Giovenale Molino, valente arpista, nato a Torino il 6 maggio 1762, registrato in prima esecuzione nella Chiesa di San Giovanni di Saluzzo il 27 agosto 2024 da Oliver Wass accompagnato dall’Ensemble APM Obiettivo Orchestra. Fu composto intorno al 1809 e dedicato a Mademoiselle Louise Pascal che lo eseguì al «Grand Théatre» di Milano.
Per la registrazione del CD effettuata a Vicenza, Oliver ha utilizzato l’arpa barocca gentilmente offerta dal Conservatorio Arrigo Pedrollo e l’arpa Salvi Iris della docente Alessia Luise, socia dell’Associazione Italiana dell’Arpa, che ringraziamo del suo supporto. Il CD è totalmente finanziato e distribuito dalla Tactus e sarà disponibile a giugno-luglio 2026.
Oliver Wass’s concept for the first of the two CDs was to juxtapose the music of Misha Mullov-Abbado with that of Italian composers from the preceding four centuries, such as Giovanni Maria Trabaci, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francesca Caccini, and Barbara Strozzi.
Misha Mullov-Abbado is a jazz bassist, composer, and arranger based in London. He was a BBC New Generation Artist and has written for numerous jazz and classical ensembles, including the BBC Concert Orchestra. The first track, Three Meditation Songs, was written for the Pelléas Ensemble in 2016. Red Ruth was written for Oliver Wass a year later, while Treachery was a special commission for this album.
This CD also includes pieces by Elsa Respighi and a highly distinctive rendition of the famous piece *Recuerdos de la Alhambra*, likely Francisco Tárrega’s most famous work. Playing it on the harp requires an unconventional fingering technique and a very relaxed hand.
The second CD features the Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, Op. 1, by Luigi Alessandro Giovenale Molino, a talented harpist born in Turin on May 6, 1762. It was recorded in its world premiere at the Church of San Giovanni in Saluzzo on August 27, 2024, by Oliver Wass, accompanied by the APM Obiettivo Orchestra. It was composed around 1809 and dedicated to Mademoiselle Louise Pascal, who performed it at the “Grand Théâtre” in Milan.
For the CD recording made in Vicenza, Oliver used the Baroque harp kindly provided by the Arrigo Pedrollo Conservatory and the Salvi Iris harp belonging to Professor Alessia Luise, a member of the Italian Harp Association, whom we thank for her support. The CD is fully funded and distributed by Tactus and will be available in June–July 2026.
OLIVER WASS
Professore di arpa al Royal College di Londra, ha vinto il Concorso Internazionale «Suoni d’Arpa» in Italia, il Concorso Internazionale di Arpa della Slovenia e il Premio della Giuria al Concorso Internazionale di Arpa di Szeged, in Ungheria. Nel maggio 2016 è diventato il primo arpista in assoluto a vincere la Guildhall Gold Medal, il premio più prestigioso della Guildhall.
Ha eseguito tutti i principali concerti per arpa, tra cui «Lyra Angelica» con la Philharmonia Orchestra, il Concerto per flauto e arpa di Mozart con i Mozartists alla Wigmore Hall, le «Danses» di Debussy con il 12 Ensemble alla Wigmore Hall, e ha diretto il Concerto per arpa di Händel alla Barbican Hall. Suona sia l’arpa moderna che quella antica e ha eseguito il Concerto per arpa di Händel con l’English Concert alla Wigmore Hall su un’arpa a tre corde, oltre ad aver tenuto tournée alla Carnegie Hall di New York, alla Philharmonie di Berlino e al Mozarteum di Salisburgo.
Suonando con «brio ed eleganza» (The Times), il suo trio per flauto, viola e arpa, The Pelléas Ensemble, ha vinto l’Henderson Award della Royal Philharmonic Society e l’Elias Fawcett Award come miglior ensemble da camera al concorso della Royal Overseas League. Il gruppo si è inoltre aggiudicato sia il Gran Premio che il Premio del Pubblico al Concorso di musica da camera di St Martin-in-the-Fields.
Oliver ha conseguito un master con il massimo dei voti presso la Guildhall School of Music & Drama, dove ha studiato con Imogen Barford. Si è inoltre laureato con il massimo dei voti in Chimica presso l’Università di York.
Harp Professor at the Royal College in London, he has won the Suoni d’Arpa International Competition in Italy, the International Harp Competition of Slovenia, and the Jury Prize at the International Harp Competition in Szeged, Hungary. In May 2016 he became the first harpist ever to win the Guildhall Gold Medal – the Guildhall’s most prestigious prize.
He has performed every major harp concerto, including Lyra Angelica with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto with The Mozartists at the Wigmore Hall, the Debussy Danses with 12 Ensemble at the Wigmore Hall, and he has directed the Handel Harp Concerto in the Barbican Hall. He plays both modern and early harps, and has performed the Handel Harp Concerto with the English Concert at the Wigmore Hall on the triple harp, as well as touring to New York’s Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, and Salzberg Mozarteum. Playing with “verve and polish” (The Times), his flute-viola-harp trio, The Pelléas Ensemble, won the Royal Philarmonic Society Henderson Award and the Elias Fawcett Award for Outstanding Chamber Ensemble at the Royal Overseas League competition. They have also won both the Grand Prize and the Audience Prize in the St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition.
Oliver holds a First Class Masters Degree from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he studied with Imogen Barford. He graduated from the University of York with a First Class Honours degree in Chemistry.
